On April 15, the International Press Center of the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs held a press conference. Newly elected member of the Greenland Parliament and the Danish Parliament, Naja Nathanielsen, outlined her main political priorities for her parliamentary term and answered questions from the media.

‘During the press conference, Peng Zhongmin, a reporter from Danish Royal News, asked about Greenland’s future political direction, raising the question: “Who will dominate Greenland in the future?” In response, Nathanielsen stated that Greenlandic society has not yet reached a majority consensus in favor of full independence. However, the public generally hopes for greater autonomy in decision-making and stronger economic competitiveness, which are the current core priorities of the government.

She emphasized that Greenland’s future political status will ultimately be decided by the people of Greenland through a democratic vote. “Whether independence will be achieved, and when, remains uncertain,” she said. “The more pressing tasks at present are to stabilize economic development and prioritize practical issues such as education, inflation, and foreign relations.”

When addressing the issue of independence, she added that while the topic still has a certain level of support within Greenlandic society, it remains complex and sensitive and is not the central focus of daily political discussions. The government is currently more focused on livelihood and economic issues, including the development of relations with the European Union and the United States.

Naja Nathanielsen was officially elected as a member of parliament on March 24, 2026. Since 2021, she has served as a minister in Greenland’s self-government, responsible for industry, trade, raw materials, as well as justice and equality affairs. She has a background in psychology and previously served as Director of the Greenland Prison and Probation Service.

The press conference focused on Greenland’s future development direction, highlighting the region’s need to balance autonomy, economic growth, and international relations. It also reflects the continued global attention on Greenland within the broader geopolitical landscape.
