Copenhagen Marathon 2025: A Record-Breaking Event

On Sunday, May 11, 2025, the Copenhagen Marathon celebrated its 44th edition, setting new records with over 21,000 participants from around the world. The event marked the largest marathon ever held in Denmark, with a sold-out race and a vibrant atmosphere throughout the city.

Race Highlights:

Men’s Elite Race: Abdi Gelelchu from Bahrain claimed victory with a time of 2:09:11, narrowly missing the course record by two seconds. He was closely followed by Ethiopia’s Gadisa Birhanu (2:09:55) and Abebaw Muniye (2:10:27).

Women’s Elite Race:

Kenya’s Margaret Agai secured first place in 2:27:31, defeating strong competitors including Mercy Kwambai (Kenya, 2:28:12) and Alisa Vainio (Finland, 2:28:21).

Danish Performances:

Mikael Johnson from AGF Athletics achieved the best Danish male time with 2:16:56. Stine Schønning from NBRO led the Danish women with a personal best of 2:39:27.

Course Overview:

The 42.195 km route showcased Copenhagen’s iconic landmarks, including Rosenborg Castle, the Marble Church, Tivoli Gardens, and Kongens Nytorv. Runners experienced a scenic journey through Nørrebro, Vesterbro, Frederiksberg, and Østerbro, with highlights such as Knippelsbro and Langebro bridges .

Record-Breaking Participation:

For the first time in its history, the Copenhagen Marathon sold out in just 12 weeks, with 18,000 runners participating. The event attracted a significant international presence, with nearly half of the participants coming from abroad .
