In collaboration with Roskilde Festival and IDA, the VELUX Group invites students to create proposals for how to make Roskilde Festival’s lounge areas greener and more circular – in other words, rethinking how to chill at Denmark’s Roskilde Festival. This year the theme of the competition is: The Window Edition!
1.Transforming spaces with innovative designs
For the third consecutive year, the hands-on case competition Sustainability Challenge is taking place at Roskilde Festival – the greatest setting for innovation and circularity. VELUX x Roskilde Festival invites students with an innovative and sustainable mindset to design, present and build elements for festival a lounge area.
Competition description: Rethink the way we “chill” at Roskilde Festival – The Window Edition
The challenge this year will be to design elements for a lounge area, so the guests at Roskilde Festival can chill in a more sustainable way in between concerts. This year, the students will build mainly using scrap wood from VELUX window production within the scope of:
2.Functional installation art Weather protection
Online meetings and presentations daysThe challenge begins with two online meetings where students were given information about the competition, timelines and event details. The first physical meetings take place in Copenhagen and Aarhus, where students present their ideas with digital presentations and small project models. Before presenting to the jury the groups receive feedback from VELUX mentors and make final adjustments to their projects and presentations if needed.
3.The Build-up Days at Roskilde Festival
More than 50 groups and 160 students from all over Denmark pitched their innovative and sustainable ideas during the Presentation Days. The jury selected 12 groups to move on in the competition and execute their ideas with life-sized models that will be built during the Build-up Days at Roskilde Festival taking place July 1-2, 2024.

Sustainability Challenge Finale
The Sustainability Challenge 2024 Finale took place Wednesday, July 3rd. The Jury selected the project ‘FRAME’ as the winning design. The project used nine VELUX window frames and plexiglass to create an installation at Roskilde Festival that focuses on community and interaction by providing spaces to sit, relax, and share festival experiences by writing on the plexiglass panels. The project also emphasizes sustainability, as the group highlights that their solution can be easily packed and reused after the festival.
5.VELUX x Roskilde Festival Sustainability Challenge 2024
The four winners are Maria Lykke, Emilie Funderud, Anders Nielsen, and Caroline Brarup Schäfer, all study Furniture Design at VIA Design & Business in Herning. The group received DKK 10,000.
